I seek to do research that: informs our understandings of issues and problems we face in our culture and day-to-day lives; involves collective analysis and collective development of solutions; connects to and inform movements for peace, justice and freedom; integrates praxis (analysis from action/action from analysis) and emphasizes multiple ways of knowing and learning (visual, kinesthetic, oral, etc.) Academia’s dominant culture of individualism, elitism and research for research’s sake is a constant challenge for me as I struggle to do work that makes a concrete difference in the world, while lifting up knowledge not only produced by myself and others connected to academia but also (non-academic) activists, working-class folks of color, and young people.
